You may be wondering why we chose to name our toys Action Dolls rather than just dolls. They are 18" dolls after all right? Yes, they are 18" dolls with plush bellies and vinyl limbs, but they are also posable just like an action figure! Hence the term Action Doll was born.
One of the biggest difference between our Action Doll and a standard 18" doll is that we added extra joints, 11 points of articulation to be exact. On top of that, most standard dolls are strung even if they do have extra joints (5 joints is most common in dolls). Strung joints are held together by an elastic string pulled tight inside the dolls body as you can see in the below image.
The problem with this is that strung joints do not always hold a pose well, especially when you get down further in the limbs (such as the knees, elbows, wrists). If the elastic is too tight, the joint will bend but quickly pop back into its natural resting position, and if the string is too loose, the joint will also be loose and dangle, unable to hold a pose. So designer and owner Katie did lots of research and busted out the drawing pad to come up with a ball joint that would move smoothly, and hold a pose strongly. The solution was to create a separate injection mold ball joint that would slide easily every which way yet be tight enough to hold a strong pose. Take a look at Katie's sketches (they may not be glamorous, but they got the job done!).
Cost-wise, it was a big stretch to add on these specialty joints, but we went with it anyways. We wanted to be 100% sure that our dolls could hold cool action poses!
After the sketches came the wax molds. Look at how the joints will fit snuggly into the limbs.
We are really excited about the quality of our dolls joints and how much fun kids will have with them and we hope you are too!
