"Toys in any form should do more than just amuse: They should also build some sort of value in a child."
is a South African doll entrepreneur. She started the hip Momppy Mpoppy doll line
for children in Africa to provide toys that celebrate traditional African prints, colors, and hairstyles. We love her perspective and hard working spirit. Her drive is to encourage play and pride in African identity and heritage.
Toys "influence a child's life, so they should be used as tools of positivity. Whatever ills a society is facing can be overcome in the next generation by including the solution in toys."
We couldn't agree more with Maite! Boy Story makes Action Dolls:
...because they are cool!
...because they are different!
...because pretend play is essential to development of ALL children!
...because our generation believes in developing empathy, nurture, and care!
...because we want to give back to our community!
...oh, and because they are just plain FUN!
Entrepreneurs like Maite or Wandile Solombela, founder of Shwe Shwe Poppis dolls, bring ear-to-ear grins to our faces. Schwe Schwe Poppis dolls are spun of children's imaginations. Each doll originated as a drawing by children from the African Children's Feeding Scheme's Malnutrition and Rehabilitation Creche in Zola, Soweto. The drawings have been brought to life as Buyisile (Zulu for "to bring back"), Philisiwe ("to heal)", Nozipho ("gift"), Hope, and Faith. These quirky dolls are super fun, and a percentage of their sales contributes to a trust fund for the children.
As Boy Story prepares to launch its new line of books and Action Dolls, we are narrowing down our selection of a charity that will receive a percentage of our profits. Starting our business from scratch, the way we want it built, gives us the freedom to develop amazing toys, encourage important values, respect our employees, and establish a corporate culture of giving and social impact. We are so proud to be joining the community of toy entrepreneurs making a difference. We hope our friends all over the world will continue their impressive and creative work to overcome mega-commercial marketing and bring real toys and play to kids everywhere.
