We’ve been following rumors for a few months on the new American Girl boy doll. Today it was announced that American Girl is releasing “Logan Everett,” a boy doll with light skin, brown hair, and blue-grey eyes. Hooray!
The fact that American Girl, a company catered towards girls that has for many years said it will not make an 18” boy doll, has come around is an impressive sign that the toy market is ready for boy dolls.
We like to think that Boy Story’s devotion to a line of diverse 18” boy dolls has been part of the strong market voice that has encouraged this change. When we started Boy Story, we had two goals in mind: First, make an incredibly high-quality and cool boy doll that balances out the market. Second, send a strong message that boys and girls alike can play with dolls and are represented in the doll industry.
The response to Boy Story’s line of boy dolls has been astounding. From Kickstarter to retail shelves, we have been supported by our community each step of the way. We are working to give back by supporting UN Women’s HeForShe movement and continuing our devotion to diversity.
One story especially touched our hearts. This past Christmas, a little boy who loves playing with dolls was experiencing severe depression and anxiety after being bullied for liking dolls. His mother was able to show him Boy Story’s website and buy him a doll. When he saw that a company existed that specifically sold boy dolls, he was encouraged that he is not alone and that his desire to nurture and care for others is a wonderful, normal trait. According to that family, Boy Story “saved Christmas.”
"According to that family, Boy Story 'saved Christmas.'"
We know that as a small, family-owned startup we will never be able to compete with the marketing and production power of Mattel’s American Girl company. But that’s perfectly fine with us. We love being able to hear and interact with our customers on a personal level, keep our mission focused, and continue to make the best product we can possibly make.
We at Boy Story are thrilled that children of all walks of life are starting to see a world of toys as diverse as the world they live in. Equality and diversity are vital childhood lessons.
Thank you for your continued support of Boy Story. Please consider adding one of our boys to your kids' doll collections - we're sure your children will be enthralled with the joints and fun style.
As 2017 continues, we look forward to bringing exciting new products that make this world a better place.
