1. When can I expect the dolls to be delivered?
We will be placing our order as soon as (1) the Kickstarter is completed (successfully!) and (2) the final molds are completed. The joint molds are nearly complete and should be final before the end of the Kickstarter. The head molds are undergoing some slight adjustments to make them more round and boyish (like our original models - the current molds were slightly distorted during development, and we want them to be closer to the originals).
2. Can the dolls be put in the washing machine?
We would recommend wiping the dolls clean and spot-cleaning the plush bodies. The vinyl can become scratched in the washing machine. The dolls can be disassembled with care, so if the bodies become extremely dirty, they could conceivably be washed in the washing machine.
3. Do you have any more dolls in the works? What about other ethnicities?
Yes! We are launching with 2 Action Dolls. Mason, who is part Spanish & part caucasian (you will catch a little Spanish being spoken in his story), and Billy, who is African American. There are two more on their way - Aspen and Kenji. Aspen is a lighter Caucasian doll with blue eyes and Kenji is Japanese. We’ve got a few more as well--but taking things one at a time. If you have ideas for characters, we’d love to hear them, so drop us a line. If the Kickstarter goes well, the new dolls will be stretch goals!
4. What about girl dolls?
We would love to add girl dolls to the line. Right now we are focused on boy dolls because that’s where the gap in the market is. We think that once the sandbox has leveled out a bit, it would be great to add in girl Action Dolls! In the meantime, our boy dolls make great companions to the girl dolls out there, and would be super for any kids’ doll collection.
5. Where are your dolls manufactured?
Our dolls are manufactured out of China. We spent months researching the right company to help us produce the dolls. The factory we work with produces a few high-end doll lines, and we have a trading company and quality controller helping us oversee the details. In addition, the dolls are safety tested for US, EU, and Canadian standards. We have personally visited the factory, and are very pleased with the prototypes and quality so far.
6. What are the dolls made of?
The doll limbs, neck, and head are made out of phthalate-free vinyl. We chose a harder type of vinyl to help withstand scratches and some rough-and-tumble play. The bodies are made of a thick but soft natural-colored cotton twill. They are stuffed with polyester. All new materials.
7. How big are the dolls?
The dolls are 18”, although with the sculpted hair, sometimes they are a bit taller when standing next to similar 18” dolls.
8. Are the dolls compatible with my other 18” doll accessories?
Many dolls fluctuate slightly in size, so depending upon the type of accessory, they may or may not fit. For accessories such as beds, cars, and dollhouses, the dolls should fit just fine. If you are dressing our dolls in outside outfits, there may be some differences, but generally we are testing the dolls and have made them to fit standard 18” clothes.
9. I’ve seen other boy dolls, what makes Boy Story any different?
Our dolls have 11 points of articulation--much like your favorite action figure. Many other dolls have few or no joints. We wanted our dolls to be poseable and able to sit, stand, and jump alongside the kids playing with them. We also designed our dolls to be more cool and less cute. A lot of the boy dolls out there are extremely feminine or baby-like. We wanted our dolls to be as close as possible to the kids who own them. When we design the clothes or refine facial features, our goals are to make the dolls as same-age as possible.
10. Are you going to produce both dolls at once? Can I choose my doll?
We are ordering a run of both Mason and Billy at once, and you may choose your doll.
11. I love the idea but don’t really need a doll. What kind of reward can I get?
Check out our very cool handmade wooden airplanes! We think they would make a nice addition to any toy collection, and are intended to encourage free imaginative play. We also have cool art and t-shirts for the non-doll purchasers. Check out our list of rewards for details!
12. Why don’t the dolls have wigged hair?
This was a tough decision because there are so many pros and cons to both wigged hair and sculpted hair. In the end, and with much debate, we went with sculpted hair. The reasons in favor of sculpted hair is (1) easy to clean, (2) doesn’t get matted, (3) roots do not show (short hair is very difficult to make realistic when short), and (4) can be formed into cooler styles than wigged hair.
13. Can you ship internationally?
We are working on this! The cost of shipping the dolls internationally is so high that we are working hard to find an economical solution for everyone. At the moment, we only have US shipping, but we expect within the week to release international shipping options and add some rewards just for the international buyers.
14. Where else can I buy the dolls?
Right now this is a Kickstarter exclusive, but stay tuned for news on retailers and our website for future purchases.
15. Will I receive my reward by Christmas?
We are doing our darndest to make sure this is out the door well in time for Christmas. There are some elements beyond our control, and we know we are still on a learning curve since this is our first international business project, but we believe they will catch Santa’s sleigh (and appear well-before the eve of Christmas!).
